Dojo Apartment and Dojo Residence Guidelines and Rules

 Here are some important things to consider if you are staying in one of the dojo apartments in Japan or the dojo there. Not following these guidelines creates extra work for Sensei and others and can result in not being chosen to stay in the future.

  1. Respect! You are a guest there and are expected to treat the space and all of its contents with respect.

    1. This means keeping everything clean, and following Japanese customs and rules like removing outdoor shoes, recycling etc.

  2. Cleanliness and Organization

    1. Clean as You Go: e.g. Wash dishes immediately after use and return them to their proper place.

    2. Daily Cleanup: Sweep or vacuum your room, entry and dojo common areas daily. Keep your personal space tidy and your luggage etc. together and not strewn about.

    3. Trash and Recycling: Ensure trash is properly sorted and disposed of accordingly (read thi)s:

        1. Yellow bags for burnable refuse

        3. Recycling in the proper containers

  3. Leave it better than you found it.

    1. Make sure you’re cleaning regularly during your stay and before you leave. It is not a hotel or AirBnb. There is no cleaning service, you are required to cleanup after yourself and make sure your linens, towels etc. are clean and/or in a basket or bag and appropriate arrangements have been made to have them cleaned after your departure.

  4. Shared Facilities: Leave shared facilities (bathroom, changing rooms, dojo shower, dojo training space) cleaner than you found them.

  5. Short Showers: Be mindful of water usage and keep showers short.

    1. Dry the Area: Wipe down or dry the bathroom area after use to avoid creating a mess.

  6. No Loud Music or Calls: Keep media and music to a minimum volume. If calling in shared spaces or near open windows/balcony etc. keep a lower voice.

  7. Lights Off: Turn off lights and appliances when not in use.

  8. Heating and Cooling: Turn off the heaters and/or AC when not in use or outside of the apartment or dojo.

  9. Fire Safety: Do not leave stoves or heating appliances unattended.

  10. Inform of Absences: Notify Sensei or a responsible party if you will be away overnight or for an extended period.

    Departure Guidelines

    1. Clean Before Leaving: Thoroughly clean your space and any shared areas before your departure.

    2. Fridge is empty and cleaned

      1. Food is disposed of properly. Especially no perishables left on shelves or in fridge.

    3. Trash is properly sorted and disposed of.
